How to Ask Your Employer for Pet Insurance

Pet insurance is one of the fastest-growing benefits that employers offer as part of an employee benefit package. Americans take their pets very seriously, and more families are choosing to cover their pets’ health with an insurance plan just as they cover their own. However, if your employer doesn’t offer pet insurance as a benefit, you can take some steps to request the addition.

Show them What’s In it For Them

Speaking strictly from an actuarial standpoint (which is exactly how your employer will look at your request), pet insurance is a profitable product. Premiums are generally affordable, making them affordable and accessible for families at every income level. And while every pet owner will likely face a vet bill of $1,000 or more in their pet’s lifetime, overall, pet insurance utilization costs less than its human counterpart. But while that’s good news for your employer, it also means that their employees enjoy peace of mind knowing that they can deal with any catastrophic pet illnesses or injuries.

All the Cool Companies are Doing It

The Society for Human Resource Management recently found that 6% of major companies offer pet insurance to employees. Some of these progressive companies are Chipotle Mexican Grill, Deloitte LLP, Delta Airlines, Edelman, Exelon Corp., Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, T-Mobile, UPS, Walgreen Co., and Xerox. The prevalence and availability of pet insurance is projected to continue to grow.

The Millennial Appeal

Love ’em or roll your eyes at ’em, there’s no denying that Millennials are the future of the workforce — and they’re already beginning to change the face of the American office. Gray cubicle walls are becoming a thing of the past as the younger generation seeks out roles that allow them to telecommute or other flexible work arrangements. Taken with the fact that Millennials are waiting longer to have children and opting to have pets instead, pet insurance is an affordable, easy value-added product that will attract younger talent to your company.

If your employer doesn’t currently offer pet insurance, ask to have a conversation with your Human Resources representative and make these points to him/her. Chances are, your employer will want to keep up with the growing trends and stay competitive in the talent market.
