Petfirst finds Princess Leia tops Star Wars names for dogs and cats
“Name your pet well, you must.”
In honor of May 4, PetFirst Pet Insurance reviewed its database of pet names to see how many people channeled the Force when naming their pet.
Turns out, yes, these are the names we’ve been looking for. Hundreds of pets were named after fictional folks from a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far way.
Of the original three main characters, Leia (with 54 pet namesakes) topped both Luke (49) and Han (4).
Han did get the prize for the most “full name” sakes – with two pets named Han Solo. One pet also carries the family name: “Skywalker.”
On the darkside, there were 17 pets named Vader and a few named Darth.
“Especially when times are uncertain, it’s nice to take a break from the news with escapist entertainment,” said Katie Blakeley, CEO of PetFirst. “It’s not surprising that so many people have named pets after Star Wars heroes.”
The O.G. Star Wars characters generally had the most namesakes among pets, but there were also 16 Reys and 21 Kylos. (There were 2 full Kylo Ren’s. Like father, like son.)
The overall most popular name, however, was Finn with 110 namesakes.
The character Chewbacca was famously based on George Lucas’s dog. So it’s not surprising that Han’s loyal companion appears to be the inspiration of 34 pets named Chewbacca or Chewie – with a couple named Wookie. There were 13 Yodas.
“We’ll be watching Yoda next year to see if the popularity of Baby Yoda drives that name higher,” said Blakeley.
No matter if you’re a movie fanatic or a casual viewer, it’s clear that Star Wars has power over more than just the galaxy! May the 4th be with your pet!
