How Much Does it Cost to Spay a Cat?

Statistics show that spayed cats may be less likely to roam in search of a mate, be hit by cars, or be euthanized in animal shelters.2  But how much does it cost to spay a cat?  Reminder, spaying is for female cats.  If you have a male cat, check out how much does it cost to neuter a cat?

What is Spaying & When is it Done?

In simple terms, spaying is a surgical procedure that prevents felines from getting pregnant and having litters of kittens.

During a cat's mating season, a female cat can have two litters with an average of 4 – 8 kittens.3

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), during a typical spay or Ovariohysterectomy, the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus of a female cat are removed.4  This procedure is supposed to render the female unable to reproduce, while eliminating both her breeding instincts and heat cycle permanently.

Although this can be a major surgery, spays are a common procedure performed by veterinarians.  General anesthesia may be given, but your frisky feline typically goes home the same day.  However, this is still surgery, so keep an eye out for signs of pain or discomfort.5

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has endorsed the “Fix Felines by Five,”  which recommends sterilization of cats by five months of age.

What is the Cost to Spay a Cat?

The cost of spaying your cat can range anywhere from $200 - $500.7  Some non-profit organizations like the Lucy Pet Foundation offer free mobile spay services in underserved communities, while others might offer reduced costs.

Note that many of these more affordable options may not provide the extra care your veterinarian will, such as pre-surgical bloodwork, suture removal and follow-up care.  If your kitty has a pre-existing condition or is older, additional costs may be incurred.

How Do You Find a Spay Clinic?

The best way to find a spay clinic is to ask your veterinarian.  However, many pet stores post flyers for low-cost clinics in the area.  SpayUSA®  is a nationwide referral network for affordable spay and neuter services.  PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA also offer a data base of providers that can help you find a spay clinic near you, but don’t forget your local animal shelter or humane society are great resources as well.
