Cook-Out Food Safety - PetFirst

Cook-Out Food Safety

It’s very tempting to hand over your food when guilt you with their stare, but here are some common cook-out items that should never be shared.

Keep your fur family safe by never sharing these tasty (for humans) treats with your pets.

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Grapes
  • Alcohol

In addition, keep these notes in mind:

  • Make sure to keep your pet a safe distance away from grills
  • Limit anything that contains salt, especially if your pet has any heart condition
  • Limit any processed foods including meat
  • Moderation is key for any food item

The avocado, an item whose safety is often in question, is actually considered to be okay in moderation. Just be sure that the pit is never in reach by your pet. ( Read more about pet - avocado safety here)

If you are ever in question about a food item, your veterinarian is your greatest resource. There are also trusted sites such as the Pet Poison Hotline (855-764-7661),  a 24/7 Animal Poison Control Center. Their website is a helpful resource should you need to quickly look up the potential danger of a food item. If you ever need to call them for a phone consultation make sure to note that fees do apply.  One of the many benefits of having PetFirst Health Insurance is that these fees can be claimed with your plan should such an incident ever arise!

We wish you healthy and safe cooking this season!
