Dealing with a Terminal Illness
Knowing you have only a short amount of time left with your beloved pet can
make you feel like your own life is coming to an end. A terminal illness can
make you feel helpless and guilty about your pets' sickness, so in order to
make the most out of your pet's final days follow these few bits of advice:
PETFIRST
TIP
Celebrate the time you have left
with your pet. Take pictures,
journal about your memories and
make more happy memories with
the time you have left.
-
The most important thing is to be knowledgeable about what your pet is going
through and how your pet will be feeling. Don't force your pet into a treatment
plan that will only lengthen their suffering.
-
If your pet is undergoing treatment, make sure you have researched and
understood the side effects, success statistics, how long it will prolong his
or her life and what that quality of life will be.
-
Get a second opinion. If you feel that your veterinarian is pushing you to make
a decision, get the advice of someone else. This may give you greater peace as
you make difficult decisions regarding the care of your pet.
-
Know your pet's quality of life. Make note of their behavior before the illness
becomes too advanced, so you can track how he is feeling and be able to make
informed decisions about his care in the future.
